Westward Living’s CEO, Kathy, grew up in North Devon. After 20 years away - during which time she lived all over the world, got married and had three beautiful sons - she and Chris decided it was time to come home. And so, Westward Living was born. Kathy and Chris created Westward Living for two reasons: they wanted to offer people growing up and living in Devon potential career opportunities, so that they wouldn’t have to move away from the area to pursues their dreams. Most of all, they wanted to give people from outside Devon the chance to discover the natural beauty of the place that we call home.
We know how lucky we are to live in this area with so much to do and see, so giving back is central to our ethos. We are an active part of the North Devon business community and do our best to support local businesses, from sole traders to larger organisations. We advise our guests on the best local pubs and restaurants, and always recommend local first. And, of course, our award-winning chefs make sure that their menus are created using the freshest, most local ingredients possible. In fact, the majority of our produce comes from within a 5-mile radius and our eggs come from the garden!
We are proud of everything local, from delicious organic local produce to arts and crafts, which are inspired by our exquisite surroundings and made locally by talented artisans. Although we don’t want to fill our office up with souvenirs, we do sell a few pieces of local interest, including North Devon Hospice’s North Devon Monopoly game, and Silver Hare jewellery, which made by local jewellers.
We know that, despite its allure to tourists, living in Devon can be tough. That’s why we do our best to make life in Devon better for as many people as we can. The Westward Living Family includes 13 local people. We recruit people from a range of ages and backgrounds, offering training and mentoring to help them discover their chosen career path. Once they have found what they want to do, we support them in finding the right job – wherever that may be.
As a well-known business, we are often asked for charitable donations and we support several charities on an ad-hoc basis. In addition, we offer long-term support to the Children’s Holiday Foundation, Bideford Sea Cadets and North Devon Animal Ambulance, three local charities that are very close to our hearts.
In addition to the above charities we are delighted to be able to support our local much loved charity Interg8 ,Bideford based charity focussing on supporting local clients, retaining our 5 star status means that we regularly replace our linen and duvet sets, this year we donated our duvets to assist fellow members in the community. Other charities we have been delighted to support in 2018 with a complimentary holiday auction prize has been the family Family Holiday Association who support families with special breaks in times of need.
We love our home and we love sharing it with other people. Which is why, every time we make a decision, we consider the impact on the local community and on how we can put as much back into the local economy as possible. When searching please note that our changeover days for our larger cottages are either a Monday or Friday during peak season (April to October). Our 4 romatic, 2 person cottages can be booked for a min 2 night stay arriving any day of the week, all year round. Out of season we have flexible arrival dates for all our cottages.
