Just three miles from our luxury holiday cottages at Duckhaven Stud, discover the charming fishing village of Appledore.

Colourful cottages line the waterfront where the Taw and Torridge rivers meet. Boats bob in the water and the promenade plays host to independent shops and cafes. Appledore has a laid-back vibe and is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. It has been a thriving fishing and trading village since the 14th century and its historic shipyard is still building today.

Life on Appledore's quay is very tranquil. As you stroll along the promenade, pop into craft and art shops to see work inspired by life in North Devon. A maze of narrow streets make up the village, so there's something special to see around every corner. Appledore's tiniest pub, The Champ, is a delightful place to stop and sample local ales and ciders. If you'd like to pick up a souvenir, visit Kennedy's Chocolate shop, although there's no guarantee this particular gift will make it all the way home.

As you meander through the streets, enjoy the slower pace of life here in the village. There's no shame in stopping at more than one of Appledore's cafes and shops to pick up a treat. Family business John's of Appledore recently opened a cafe here, so you can tuck into its outrageously delicious cakes, pastries and light lunches. For families, there's plenty to keep the kids entertained. The quay is a prime spot for crabbing, a traditional seaside pastime that is very much alive in North Devon. Appledore has many annual celebrations, including Appledore Book Festival, which welcomes famous authors for a 10-day literary extravaganza.

For adventurous families, couples and groups, the village has so much more to offer than its land-based activities. Take to the water for an afternoon of sailing, kayaking or wind-surfing! Local adventure centre Skern Lodge offers a huge range of activities, so you can pick up a new skill or hire equipment. If you're more comfortable on land, the centre has opportunities for archery, high ropes and zip wires.

Dining out in Appledore is always a treat! As well as indulgent cafes such as John's Deli, Susie's Tea Rooms and The Coffee Cabin, the village is home to beautiful, traditional pubs and restaurants. Head to The Beaver Inn for tasty, contemporary British fare and a delightful beer garden. The Seagate, overlooking the water, is a stylish 17th century inn, serving exquisite seafood and succulent grilled meat. Don't miss out on a Hocking's ice cream for dessert! A firm favourite among locals. If you want to dine from the comfort of your luxury North Devon holiday cottage, don't forget about our private dining service. Our executive chef and his team would love to cook a delicious menu, just for you.

Less than 10 minutes from Westward Living, Appledore is an excellent choice for a day out. With so much to see and do in the area, there really is something for everyone. So, what are you waiting for?
