WBC Champ John Conteh MBE packs a punch at Westward Living

The sunset rooms at Westward Living are undoubtedly and awe-inspiring setting, each year owners Kathy and Chris Murdoch open the venue to their chosen charity for a sensational fund-raising event.  The couple chose a much-loved local charity the Bideford Boxing Club.   The idea was to raise funds for both the boxing club who need an extension for their Bideford based East of the Water club and the Ringside Charitable Trust. Bideford Boxing Club welcomes boxers from aged 6 to 88 and offers a range of activities for the community including a well-attended Parkinson’s group. The club has produced many incredible fighters including Tommy Langford, GB team member Dylan Burston and recently turned Pro Billy Stanbury.  Ringside Charitable Trust is national charity which has been set up to care for professional boxers at the end of their careers.

Along with the club trainer Richard Grigg, Kathy and her team created a stunning setting to host the gala event for 134 guests.   The star-studded event was hosted boxing legends Mr John Conteh MBE and world-renowned trainer Mr Johnny Oliver.

The event was a knockout success and all the proceeds from the night were donated to the charity.  Ocean Kave and Bideford Boxing club raised over £6000 for the Bideford Boxing club extension and the Ringside Charitable Trust.  Amongst the Auction prizes were 5-star luxurious holidays donated by Westward Living, and an impressive collection of boxing memorabilia including a pair of golden boxing gloves signed by Anthony Joshua kindly donated by AJ’s trainer at Finchley Club Mr Johnny Oliver.

Kathy Murdoch owner of  Westward Living said “We were so delighted to offer our venue for the Bideford Boxing Club the Ringside Charitable Trust. We love hosting charity events at Ocean Kave, and It was an honour to welcome John Conteh MBE and Mr Johnny Oliver to the top table, we are so pleased that we were able to help them raise this fantastic sum of money on the night.  We look forward to supporting both charities going forward in 2021.

This event would not have been possible without the generous support of St Austell Brewery, Phillip Dennis, Paula and Royston Dennis’s catering team, Ozzy Symons MagicianTwigs, Liam Fairley,  and professional photographers Steve Hatch and Andy Francis”
