Winter Transformations for our Holiday Cottages

As one of the most challenging years for tourism drew to an end, we decided to close our doors for the winter, update the décor in some of our cottages, and take a little time off. However, it turns out that “time off” is not in our vocabulary! While ruminating on ideas for the cottages we spent time going over customer feedback and we soon realised that, although our five-star cottages are decorated and equipped to a high standard, they weren’t quite right for the 2020s. People enjoy bigger, brighter communal spaces and value the luxury of clean lines and bespoke artwork. So, we rolled up our sleeves, got in touch with some local talent and decided that we would make the guest experience better than ever!

Cottage updates

All of our cottages had their regular updates, including replacing televisions throughout and generally freshening up the décor. However, you told us that a handful of the cottages needed a little bit more work – and we listened. 

Based on your feedback, we knew that Frankie’s and Sadlers Cottages were a little outdated and would benefit from a complete upgrade. With a focus on communal living, we added big breakfast bars perfect for quality family time. In the bathrooms, corner tubs were removed and replaced with double walk-in showers and a conventional tub. 

Our romantic Dream Cottage has been transformed in opulent Emma Shipley fabrics in pink and grey hues, with a stunning marble kitchen and new round hot tub with air source heat pump in the stunning, south-facing garden. 

It’s goodbye stripes in Star Cottage, where we embraced Duckhaven Stud’s racing colours of green and gold, treated the kitchen to a contemporary, functional makeover and installed a new hot tub with heat source pumps, which offer quicker heating and reduced environmental impact. 

Royal Celerity has always been our romantic flagship, and we couldn’t let it go another season without a new hot tub. 

With their high-end amenities, Farriers and Furlong needed a light touch upgrade with new décor and soft furnishings to add a more modern, luxurious feel. 

Local investment

It is no secret that we love where we live and that a large motivator for us is investing in the area and community so that Westward Ho! will continue to be a thriving place for our children to grow up in. As well as doing our bit to bring people to the area, wherever possible we like to work with local suppliers. This has multiple benefits; reinvesting in our community, providing and unrivalled experience to guests, and discovering incredible talents right on our doorstep:

Art by Stephen Ring - we were delighted to commission pieces from this much-celebrated local artist, whose contemporary art encapsulates the majesty of the sea using vibrant layers of resin embellished with real gold.  

Kitchens fitted by Aaron Jones at Tarka Kitchens – no expense or time was spared fitting the contemporary, high-end kitchens which are perfect for cooking at home or an in-cottage dining experience. 

Interior Design by Liam Fry at Paint Ex – we had so much fun working with Liam! Stunning wallpaper is central to our new décor and we worked together to achieve incredible results. Liam has such an eye for detail and design – his work really is faultless (and we don’t say that often!). 

Curtains by Colin from Curtain Call – Colin is incredibly talented, making stunning soft furnishings to meet our exact needs. We entrusted him with thousands of pounds of fabrics and he didn’t disappoint!

Toiletries by Clovelly Soap – this local company creates divine toiletries from locally sourced ingredients, and we are very excited that they will be creating a bespoke range for us including Westward Living Love Dust (watch this space for more details!). 

An unrivalled experience

Some people may ask why we invest so much in the details, why we don’t just pick a theme and carry it through every cottage; order a job lot of prints or choose quality products off the shelf. That’s simple. For us, everything is personal! From the lupins in the wallpaper of Dream Cottage, which reflect the lupins in the garden, to the subtle equine theme throughout every cottage, every little touch and style consideration is as unique as our guests. 

Our customer experience extends beyond the décor and facilities to the outstanding customer service that we provide to every guest. We have further improved this by investing in Touch Day, a fabulous digital guest book which gives guests all the information they need for before and during their stay, at their fingertips.
